Rain is the factor most hunters get backwards. Plenty of good sits get cancelled because of a forecast that would have produced, and plenty of miserable ones get sat through in weather deer never move in. The distinction is intensity and timing.
Rain intensity and what deer do
- Drizzle and light rain: movement is normal to above normal. Wet leaves quiet the woods and dampen scent — deer often feel more secure. Excellent hunting.
- Steady moderate rain: reduced but not stopped. Deer shift toward field edges and open feeding later in the day.
- Heavy rain and thunderstorms: deer bed and wait it out. Sitting through this is usually wasted time.
The two windows that matter
Before the front. In the four to twelve hours ahead of an incoming system, with the barometer falling, deer feed hard. If rain is due tomorrow morning, tonight is a sit worth taking.
The hour after it stops. When a soaking rain ends, deer get up almost immediately. Pair that with clearing skies, a rising barometer and a temperature drop and you have one of the highest percentage windows in whitetail hunting. Be in the stand before the rain quits, not after.
Practical notes
- Rain washes scent — it is a good day to move stands or push into fresh ground.
- Blood trailing after rain is difficult; wait for a clean shot opportunity.
- Wet, quiet ground makes still-hunting genuinely viable.

Best Hunting Time scores precipitation by intensity per hour, and specifically detects rain starting within the next few hours and rain stopping after a meaningful accumulation. Both are conditions your optional alerts can notify you about when they overlap with other favorable factors.
