Barometric Pressure

Barometric pressure and deer movement: the range, the trend, the timing

Of all the weather variables hunters track, barometric pressure is the one most consistently linked to daylight whitetail movement. Deer appear to sense pressure change well before we feel the weather that follows, and they adjust feeding accordingly.

The preferred pressure range

Pressure (inHg)Typical deer movement
Below 29.80Suppressed — storm conditions, deer hold in cover
29.80 – 29.90Below average, improving as pressure climbs
29.90 – 30.40Preferred window — best daylight activity
Above 30.40Often stagnant; movement tightens to dawn and dusk

The trend matters more than the number

A static reading of 30.10 tells you far less than knowing the barometer has climbed 0.20 inHg in the past six hours. Two trends are worth planning around:

  • Sharp fall ahead of a storm. Deer feed hard in the four to twelve hours before rain or snow arrives. This is the classic "get in the stand before the front" window.
  • Rapid rise behind a departing front. Clearing skies, dropping temperature and a climbing barometer together produce some of the most reliable daylight movement of the season.

Pressure never acts alone

A perfect 30.20 reading on a 75-degree afternoon in October will not fill a tag. Pressure earns its weight when it stacks with a temperature drop, rain ending, light wind, and rut timing. Overlap is the signal.

How the forecast uses it

Best Hunting Time reads pressure and its rate of change hour by hour for your ZIP code, scores it against the preferred range, and tells you plainly in the reason line whether the barometer is helping or hurting your sit. If pressure moves rapidly into — or is about to fall out of — the preferred range, your optional alerts can let you know.
